What This Is

This listing is for the ignition condenser, also called the distributor capacitor, used in the points ignition of the Ford N-series tractor. It is an ignition part, not an air conditioning condenser. The Ford 2N, 8N, and 9N tractors were built before automotive air conditioning, and this condenser lives inside the distributor, where it absorbs the voltage spike each time the breaker points open. A good condenser keeps the points from arcing and burning and gives a strong, clean spark; a failed one causes weak spark, hard starting, and rapid point wear.

Fitment

This condenser fits the front-mount distributor, the distributor that mounts on the front of the engine behind the radiator. It fits the Ford 9N and 2N for all years and the early Ford 8N built before serial number 263843. Ford changed the 8N to a side-mount distributor at serial number 263844, around 1950, and those later 8N tractors use a different condenser. If you have an 8N, check whether your distributor mounts on the front of the engine (front mount) or on the side at an angle (side mount) before ordering.

What Is Included

You receive one ignition condenser for the front-mount distributor. The breaker points, rotor, cap, and other tune-up parts are not included and are sold separately.

Specifications

The condenser is a sealed capacitor with a mounting bracket and lead wire, built to the original front-mount distributor specification for the Ford N-series. It installs with the breaker points and connects to the point assembly to suppress arcing. It is a routine maintenance item and is normally replaced whenever the points are replaced.

Cross-Reference

This is a direct replacement for Ford A0NN12300A and the current New Holland number 87741868 (also shown as 87741868GV). It is a widely used points condenser that is also cross-referenced to John Deere AM31029, where it is used on John Deere 110 through 400 lawn and garden tractors and the John Deere 60 skid steer, and to Kohler 230722 and 230722-S, used on Kohler K-series engines with battery ignition such as the K91, K141, K161, K181, K241, K301, K321, and K341. These numbers are listed for reference only to help you identify the correct condenser.

Ordering Guidance

For a Ford 9N or 2N this is the correct condenser. For an 8N, confirm you have the front-mount distributor (serial number up to 263843) rather than the later side-mount distributor. When you service the ignition, replace the condenser together with the breaker points and set the point gap and timing for the best spark and easiest starting.
