This wood pitman arm stick is the drive link in the sickle bar cutting mechanism on New Idea hay mowers. The pitman arm converts the rotary motion of the mower drive into the reciprocating back-and-forth action of the sickle knife. Over time, these hardwood sticks bow, crack, or wear out and require replacement to keep the sickle bar operating properly.
